Diving in Puerto Aventuras

Explore diving in Puerto Aventuras

Puerto Aventuras is one of the most diver-friendly communities in the Riviera Maya. Here you’ll find several small operators willing to show you the wonders of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef.

This section of the reef lies about 5-10 minutes offshore by boat and contains lush coral gardens and deep cuts or canyons dropping to 130 feet (40 meters). There’s also the Mama Vina Wreck, suitable to advanced divers. The current near Puerto Aventuras is mild, making this a great place for beginners and experts alike.

If you’re looking to gain an initial certification or learn a new skill, Puerto Aventuras is the perfect environment. Several dive shops within the community will also be able to assist you in planning a two-tank, day trip to the cenotes, Playa del Carmen, Akumal or Cozumel.

When to dive in Puerto Aventuras

There is no bad time to dive the Caribbean. In fact, the water temperatures remain constant year-round and cool only slightly during the winter months.

On average, water temperatures vary between 78 and 82ºF (25 and 28ºC) in Puerto Aventuras. The cooler waters found in the winter months tend to attract more pelagic animals than other months. The best time for cenote diving is between May and September. This is because the summer months feature the best visibility in both the cenotes and the sea. These months also bring the best light to the caves and result in the better photographs.

From May to September, green and loggerhead turtles arrive to lay their eggs on the area’s beaches.
