Diving Cooktown

Explore diving Cooktown

Perched at the northern edge of the Great Barrier Reef, Cooktown offers some of the most pristine and untouched diving in Australia. This remote coastal town is a gateway to diverse coral reefs, deep drop-offs, and thriving marine ecosystems. Divers can explore Ribbon Reefs and Cod Hole, famous for massive potato cod, reef sharks, and vibrant coral formations. The region’s isolation means fewer crowds and healthier reefs, teeming with colorful fish, turtles, and pelagic species. With crystal-clear visibility and rich biodiversity, Cooktown promises an authentic, adventure-filled diving experience for both seasoned divers and nature lovers.

When to dive Cooktown

The best time to experience scuba diving in Cooktown is between May and November, during Queensland’s dry season. Expect calm seas, clear visibility exceeding 25 meters, and comfortable water temperatures between 24°C and 29°C. These months offer excellent diving conditions and the chance to spot manta rays, reef sharks, and migrating humpback whales. The summer months (December to March) bring warmer waters and increased plankton, enhancing marine life activity but with slightly reduced visibility. Year-round, Cooktown’s reefs remain vibrant, making it a top destination for Great Barrier Reef diving away from the crowds.
