The history of the ships on Long Island, in Puerto Cabello, Venezuela, dates back to World War II. During this conflict, several Italian and German-flagged ships sought refuge in Venezuelan waters, a country that declared itself neutral. When Venezuela changed its stance and joined the Allies, the crews of these ships, following orders from their respective countries, burned their own vessels to prevent them from falling into enemy hands. These ships, which included the "Wacko" (Italian) and the "Sesostris" (German), were scrapped and abandoned near Long Island, where over time they became artificial reefs, attracting divers and tourists interested in the marine life that now inhabits their remains.
