First Cathedral is a must see dive site when visiting Maui. As you enter through the dark hole an expansive cavern illuminated by skylights opens up with fish silhouetted in the turquoise beams.
You head to the vividly lit central altar, a lava rock that has fallen from the ceiling of the cavern, and spend a moment in stillness taking in the scene.
As you explore deeper into the Cathedral, you look into the “confessionals” — small side chambers — that are often home to resting sharks, puffer fish, crabs, eels, and nudibranchs.
After a few minutes you exit out the “shotgun” — a lava shoot at the back of the cave — and continue your dive through the coral garden and other lava formations spotting frogfish, reef fish, and eels along the way. This amazing site can be visited year round and always offers a memorable dive experience. Don't forget your camera so that you can remember and relive this one of a kind dive site.
