Diving Portsmouth

Explore diving Portsmouth

Portsmouth, New Hampshire offers some of the most diverse and exciting cold-water diving in New England. Located along the Piscataqua River and the nearby Atlantic coastline, the area features a mix of rocky reefs, ledges, walls, sandy bottoms, and historic maritime structures that create a rich underwater environment.

Divers can encounter a wide variety of marine life including lobsters, crabs, sea stars, anemones, flounder, sculpin, and seasonal schools of fish. Rocky outcrops and natural formations provide habitat for both large and small creatures, making the area appealing for photographers and naturalists alike. Visibility varies by season and conditions, but clear days often reveal dramatic underwater terrain and excellent opportunities for exploration.

Water temperatures range from the high 30s to mid-50s (°F) depending on the time of year, making exposure protection such as dry suits or thick wetsuits common. Tides and currents play an important role in dive planning, especially near inlets and river mouths, so dives are often timed around slack water for optimal conditions.

Whether exploring coastal reefs, shallow coves, or deeper ledges, Portsmouth offers rewarding dives for both newer and experienced cold-water divers who enjoy rugged scenery, marine biodiversity, and a true North Atlantic diving experience.

When to dive Portsmouth

Diving in Portsmouth, New Hampshire is possible year-round, but the most popular season runs from late spring through early fall when water temperatures are warmer and surface conditions are more comfortable. June through October typically offers the best combination of visibility, marine life activity, and weather.

Winter and early spring provide opportunities for more experienced cold-water divers, including dry suit and ice-style conditions, with fewer crowds and unique seasonal marine life. Regardless of the season, dive conditions are strongly influenced by tides and weather, so trips are usually planned around slack water for the safest and clearest diving.
