Divers can explore a range of dive sites suitable for all skill levels, from shallow coral gardens teeming with tropical fish to deeper sites featuring dramatic rock formations and shipwrecks. The area is known for its healthy coral reefs that provide habitat for species such as sea turtles, reef sharks, rays, lionfish, moray eels, and numerous colorful reef fish.
Seasonal marine life sightings vary, with certain months offering better opportunities to encounter specific species like Napoleon wrasse or large schools of fish. The diving season typically runs from October to April, when sea conditions are most favorable.
Surface intervals between dives often take place on boats or nearby beaches, allowing divers to enjoy scenic coastal views and rest before the next dive. Safety standards are high, with many dive operators following international guidelines and offering full equipment rental, guided dives, and dive insurance options.
Overall, Southern Sri Lanka provides a rich underwater landscape combined with warm water temperatures averaging 27–30°C, making it an inviting destination for both novice and experienced divers seeking diverse and rewarding dive experiences.
The best time to dive in the Unawatuna area is from October to April, during the dry season when seas are calm and visibility is at its best — often reaching 20 to 30 meters. Water temperatures remain warm year-round, typically between 27°C and 30°C, making it comfortable for diving without a thick wetsuit.
The monsoon season runs from May to September, bringing rougher seas, reduced visibility, and more frequent rain, which can limit diving opportunities. However, some advanced dive sites may still be accessible for experienced divers during this period.
If you want to experience the richest marine biodiversity, plan your visit between December and March, when sightings of turtles, rays, and larger pelagic fish like reef sharks are more common.

Unawatuna is located about 8 kilometers (5 miles) south of Galle, along Sri Lanka’s scenic southern coastline.
By Air:
The nearest international airport is Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB) in Colombo, approximately 140 kilometers (87 miles) north of Unawatuna. From the airport, you can take a taxi or arrange a private transfer directly to Unawatuna (approximately 2.5 to 3 hours).
By Train:
The coastal railway line connects Colombo to Galle and Matara. You can catch a train from Colombo Fort Station to Galle Railway Station (around 2.5–3 hours). From Galle, Unawatuna is a short 10–15 minute tuk-tuk or taxi ride.
By Bus:
Regular buses run from Colombo and Galle to Unawatuna. Buses are an affordable option but can be less comfortable and slower, especially during peak times.
By Car or Taxi:
Renting a car or booking a private taxi/transfer is a popular choice for comfort and convenience. The drive along the southern coastal highway (A2) offers beautiful ocean views.
Once in Unawatuna, the Seahorse Dive Center is easy to find — located near the main beach entrance, close to landmarks like Cargills Food City.
