Diving in Myanmar (Burma)

Explore diving in Myanmar (Burma)

Unexplored Myanmar has a plethora of dive sites waiting to be discovered. With more than 800 islands, Myanmar’s Mergui Archipelago is home to some of southeast Asia’s best diving.

Enjoy a series of open ocean sites featuring large marine life. Whatever your dive experience, you are sure to find a site to satisfy the explorer in you.

Divemasters are still discovering everything the area has to offer, but you can expect healthy corals, schools of devil rays and the occasional whale or nurse shark. Small stuff includes: frogfish, lobsters, crabs and colorful shrimp - a macro-lover’s dream.

Shark sightings are very common on open ocean dives. Nurse sharks are frequently seen with a few reef sharks thrown. Burma Banks is definitely the place to go if you love to see pelagic species.

More Information

Yangon International Airport is the major hub for all international flights entering or exiting Myanmar. However, reaching the Mergui Archipelago from Yangon requires either a local flight on an infrequent service or two to three days of bus journeys.

To remedy this problem, most liveaboards with destinations in Myanmar leave from Ranong, Thailand. This city can be easily accessed from either Bangkok or Phuket, both of which have international airports of their own. Frequent bus services and taxis ply the route to Ranong from most of Thailand’s tourist destinations.
