Diving in Negril

Explore diving in Negril

There are over 20 noteworthy dive spots along the seven miles of Negril’s coastline with varying degrees of difficulty that give every diver a wide range of options. Dive spots generally range from 30 to 90 feet (9-27 meters) and Negril generally experiences calm waters due to being on the west coast of the island. The reef structures are intricate and vast creating a wide variety of unique and scenic underwater landscapes including caverns, caves, ledges, walls and arches. These structures, in turn, provide great habitat for marine life to thrive. Some of the best dive spots to view these unique structures include The Throne Room, Arches, Kings Fish Point, Long Wall, Sharks Reef, Fantasy Reef, Golden Gate and Treasure Reef. Wreck diving is also an option including Deep Plane, Shallow Plane, and Tug boat/Pete. Whatever dives you choose to enjoy, you can count on excellent visibility, warm Caribbean waters and abounding marine life.

When to dive in Negril

Visitors can travel to Negril year-round considering water temperatures range from 80F/26C to 86F/30C and air temperatures range from 75F/23C to 88F/31C throughout the year. Negril experiences the rainy season from July to October concurrent with hurricane season in the summer. Rain showers are often short-lived due to the proximity to the coastline but can offer a cool down during the hotter months of the year. Despite the rainy season, there are still plenty of warm sunny days in the summer, but rainy weather can negatively impact visibility. The dry season ranges from December to April which are also peak season for Jamaica.

More Information

When traveling to Negril, it is recommended to fly to the Sangster International Airport (MBJ) in Montego Bay which is located approximately 50 miles/80km east of Negril. There are several transportation options available at the airport to make it the rest of the way to Negril including shuttles, buses, cabs and rental cars. All options will provide a beautiful commute along the coastline that generally takes about two hours. If your flight is through the Norman Manley International Airport (KIN) near Kingston, then there will still be plenty of transportation options to Negril from this international airport including private shuttle, bus, taxi, or rental car. This is about 170 miles/273 km which is about a 4-hour drive depending on the route. The last available airport is Negril Aerodrome (NEG) which is adjacent to Negril and just a quick and convenient 20-minute drive. This is the closest airport and offers an easy drive into Negril. However, this small airport may require you to take a connecting flight from one of the other major airports.
