Marathon is a coastal destination in eastern Attica, approximately 40 km from Athens. The area offers a combination of shallow reefs, rocky formations and underwater walls that make diving enjoyable for both beginner and experienced divers.
Water visibility is typically good during most of the year, often ranging between 10 and 25 meters depending on weather conditions. Divers can encounter octopus, moray eels, sea bream, groupers, nudibranchs and a variety of Mediterranean marine species.
The diving season generally extends from spring through autumn, with water temperatures ranging from approximately 17°C in spring to 27°C during summer. Calm sea conditions and easy shore access make Marathon a popular diving destination for recreational training and guided dives.
The surrounding coastline and nearby islands provide several dive opportunities, including reefs, rocky seabeds and marine habitats characteristic of the Aegean Sea
Diving is possible throughout the year, with the best conditions typically from May to October. During summer, water temperatures range from 22°C to 27°C and visibility is often at its best. Spring and autumn also offer excellent diving conditions with fewer visitors and comfortable temperatures.
Marathon is located approximately 40 km northeast of Athens and can be reached by car in about 45–60 minutes from Athens International Airport. Visitors can also use public transportation, with regular bus services connecting Athens to Marathon throughout the year.
