Diving in Limon

Explore diving in Limon

Scuba diving in Limón, Costa Rica, on the Caribbean coast, offers a vibrant, lesser-known underwater experience. The region is known for its shallow coral reefs, warm turquoise waters, and colorful marine life. Dive sites near Cahuita National Park and Manzanillo are home to lobsters, nurse sharks, stingrays, sea turtles, and an array of tropical reef fish. The diving here is more relaxed, with calm currents and excellent visibility during the dry season, making it ideal for beginner and intermediate divers. Expect to explore lush coral gardens, sponge-covered reefs, and untouched marine ecosystems teeming with biodiversity.

When to dive in Limon

The best time to scuba dive in Limón is during the Caribbean coast’s dry season, which typically runs from February to April and September to October. These months offer crystal-clear water, minimal rainfall, and visibility up to 25 meters. Water temperatures stay warm year-round, averaging 27–29°C, making diving pleasant in any season. The rainy periods, especially June to August, may bring runoff and reduced visibility. For the best experience with fewer tourists and calm ocean conditions, aim to visit in late September or early October, when marine life is active and diving conditions are at their peak.

More Information

To reach Limón, fly into Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO) in San José, Costa Rica’s capital. From there, it’s about a 3.5 to 4.5-hour drive east via Route 32 to reach Puerto Limón and the surrounding coastal towns like Cahuita and Puerto Viejo. You can travel by rental car, private shuttle, or public bus, with scenic views of the mountains and rainforest along the way. While Limón does have a small regional airport, most travelers find road transport from San José to be the most convenient and affordable option. Once on the Caribbean coast, dive shops are easily accessible, with many located in Puerto Viejo and Cahuita, offering daily boat dives to nearby reefs and marine parks.
