What's the difference between Discover Scuba Diving and Open Water Diver?

Discover Scuba Diving is a short introductory experience, while the PADI Open Water Diver course is a full certification program. Open Water Diver training allows you to dive independently with a buddy after completing knowledge, confined water, and open water training.

 
How do I progress from Discover Scuba Diving to Open Water Diver?
To upgrade from PADI Discover Scuba Diving (DSD) to a full Open Water Diver certification, you must complete three components: PADI eLearning theory, the remaining four pool (confined water) training sessions, and the final three open water ocean or lake dives.
If your PADI Instructor logs your DSD experience, your initial pool session and first open water dive can count directly toward your full course. This credit is valid for 12 months, saving you time and money. You can finish this training at your original dive shop or transfer your credits to a local dive center using a DSD Referral form.
 
Does Discover Scuba Diving count towards my Open Water Diver certification?
Yes, a PADI Discover Scuba Diving (DSD) experience can count toward your PADI Open Water Diver certification. It can credit you for Confined Water Dive 1 and Open Water Dive 1, saving you time and money. To qualify, you must start your Open Water course within 12 months of your DSD. You must also inform your instructor beforehand so they can officially evaluate and register your skills to meet Open Water standards.
 
Why should I become a certified Open Water Diver?

A PADI Open Water Diver certification gives you a lifetime qualification to dive independently with a buddy down to 18 metres (60 feet) globally. It grants you full access to equipment rentals and guided excursions, reduces your trip costs compared to beginner try-dives, builds essential technical skills like buoyancy control, and unlocks underwater travel adventures like exploring shipwrecks and coral reefs.
