Culebra is an enchanting Spanish Virgin Island situated 17 miles east of mainland Puerto Rico, 9 miles north of Vieques, and 12 miles west of St. Thomas. The island is only 7 miles long and home to fewer than 2,000 local residents. Culebra boasts an intricate shoreline with cliffs, sandy coral shores and mangroves; with numerous surrounding cays, and the Luis Peña Channel Natural Reserve.
The island of Culebra is semi-arid with no fresh water streams and therefore, no surface run off. Because of this, the ocean visibility is among the clearest in the world year round, making for some of the best snorkeling and SCUBA diving. Culebra has several beautiful beaches, many of which are protected and therefore nearly waveless. Flamenco Beach, the most popular, is also consistently rated one of the world’s best. Paradise is found!
There are two ways to get to Culebra – by air or by sea. Getting here via ferry can sometimes be a challenge unless you are able to book tickets in advance via the online ticketing system (puertoricoferry.com). During high season (December – March), getting ferry tickets can be even more challenging. The flights to Culebra are on small planes out of SJU, SIG, or RVR and they fill up fast, so make your flight reservations early. A popular option is to fly to Culebra to kick off your vacation quickly, and then take the ferry back to Puerto Rico to save a few dollars and extend your surface interval if you’ve been diving.
