Diving in Herradura

Explore diving in Herradura

Herradura, located on Costa Rica’s central Pacific coast, is one of the newest dive locations in this Central American country.

The underwater landscape is defined by volcanic formations such as arches, caverns and tunnels. You’ll see plenty of pelagic species, the main attraction to diving in the area. Most of the diving is located within ten minutes of the shore by boat. However, it’s also possible to take an extended diving day at Isla Tortuga where you’ll find fascinating shipwrecks.

Most of the diving near Herradura is subject to strong currents and surges, making it more suitable to intermediate and advanced divers. However, there are a limited number of sites located in the protected bay that are ideal for beginners.

When to dive in Herradura

December to April is dry season in Costa Rica. During these months, very little rain falls throughout the Pacific coast.

The dry season is the best time to visit Herradura if you wish to scuba dive. It is also best if you want to split your time between sunbathing on the beach and diving into the underwater world. These months offer the opportunity to see Giant Manta Rays at The Island as well as other passing pelagic species.

This is also the best time to dive in Costa Rica for beginner divers who prefer easy, colorful diving. During these months, divers will benefit from calmer seas and visibility reaching 45 feet (13 meters).
