AWARE Week

Empower Your Local
Community to Take Positive
Action for the Ocean

15 – 23 SEPTEMBER 2018

Join PADI and Project AWARE in a celebration for a clean and healthy ocean. We — PADI Dive Centers, instructors and divers — are a powerful worldwide voice. Together we can encourage local action for global change.

By focusing your efforts during AWARE Week on AWARE Week initiatives—including teaching Project AWARE conservation-minded specialty courses, you and your fellow PADI Instructors and Dive Centers will empower and motivate divers everywhere to care for our oceans.

Your leadership is needed to encourage and empower more divers to look after the ocean! During AWARE Week, dive centers and instructors can organize AWARE Week initiatives, teach AWARE courses, and focus on conservation-minded specialties and practices specific to their local dive areas.

About Project AWARE

Tackle Marine Debris

Project AWARE works to reduce underwater impacts of marine debris and prevent trash from entering the ocean in the first place. The flagship citizen-science program, Dive Against Debris®, is the first and only marine debris survey of its kind, and is focused on scuba divers reporting types and quantities of debris found on the ocean floor.

Protect Sharks and Rays

Project AWARE works with various partners to use the power of international conservation agreements and management regulations for change. Project AWARE advocates for the full protection of shark species listed as Endangered or Critically Endangered by the IUCN, and for the establishment of precautionary shark fishing limits and regulations to ensure all sharks are landed with their fins attached.

PADI Dive Shops Making Green Work for Their Business

These 100% AWARE PADI Dive Centers are connecting ocean adventure and ocean conservation with every certification. Protecting the environment is a full-time activity and these 100% AWARE dive centers are setting a great example for others to follow. If you aren’t sure how to introduce conservation-minded practices into your business, read on for inspiration.

Crystal Dive, Thailand

Crystal Dive has conservation at the heart of their business. They offer a wide range of eco-diving courses and educate all their divers on the importance of good environmental practices both on land and under the water. They have a conservation partner, Eco Koh Tao, with whom they take on a number of projects including building an artificial reef, where beginners can practice their buoyancy, taking the pressure off other dive sites.

Bubbles Dive Centre, Malta

Bubbles Dive Centre incorporates marine conservation throughout their business. So that local dive sites are kept clean and healthy, every dive is treated as a Dive Against Debris® and data is reported to Project AWARE®. All of their diving courses include additional skills such as responsible diving techniques and environmental awareness and they are the official Turtle Rescue team for Gozo.

VIP Diving, Bonaire

VIP Diving is leading the way for conservation on Bonaire. The PADI Green Star Award facility has solar panels on the roof of the center and 12 wind turbines allowing them to use green energy for most of their activities. They give their guests reusable water bottles and provide refills at their dive shop and dive sites, reducing single-use plastic on the island.

Project AWARE Specialty

The revised Project AWARE Specialist course is an introduction to Project AWARE as a global movement for ocean protection. It focuses and expands on the 10 Tips for Divers to Protect the Ocean Planet to provide guidance and help you make a difference for ocean protection every time you dive, travel and more. Remaining as a dry course it is ideal to engage divers and non-divers alike as well as a perfect solution to those bad weather days. Look out for the revised curriculum launching in September.

AWARE Shark Conservation Specialty

Teach the AWARE Shark Conservation Specialty course and educate your divers about the value of sharks to marine ecosystems and economies. You’ll help them learn more about the causes of declining shark populations, and the actions they can take to become informed and passionate shark defenders. The course helps you dispel misconceptions about sharks, and inspire divers who will speak up, act and protect sharks. Sharks need you!

Dive Against Debris Specialty

Teach your divers how to make a difference on every dive they make. Share the knowledge and skills to activate their inner citizen-scientist by teaching the Dive Against Debris Specialty. Be sure to invite them to take part in regular Dive Against Debris surveys under your guidance.

Join PADI Members around the world for AWARE Week and show your support for ocean health.
