Mother and Twins Become PADI Instructors on Same Program in Fiji
Mike Holme – Director, Training and Quality Management – PADI Asia Pacific.
In 2007 whilst on holidays in Fiji, I took the opportunity to visit Beachcomber Island to present the PADI Asia Pacific Member Award for ‘Young Achievers in Diving’ to 14 year old twins Harrison and Taylor Koens. At the time, they were living on the island where their parents own and manage Subsurface Fiji, a PADI 5 Star Instructor Development Centre, and were being home-schooled by their mother Karen. The following year, however, they were returning to their native New Zealand to complete high school.
In January 2011, I visited Fiji to run a PADI Instructor Examination in the same region and found to my delight that the twins (now aged 18 and having graduated from high school) and their mother, were candidates on the course. This made for an interesting dynamic as the competition between the three divers could have been intense; however they all excelled and passed the PADI Instructor Exam with flying colours. The twins are about to start university in New Zealand to study medicine and engineering and plan to work as PADI Instructors during their university breaks.
Also on the same programme were three indigenous Fijian Divemasters working at Subsurface Fiji, who all successfully completed their Instructor Exam; congratulations to Timoci Vumalumu, Taniela Vatunitu and Tekini Nairibuli. Also thanks to PADI IDC Staff Instructor, Apenisa Ramototabua for all his hard work in helping his colleagues become PADI Instructors.
