The Issue
Our beaches and oceans are littered with debris, these are a consequence of everyone’s actions and sixty percent of this debris results from shoreline and recreational activities. People don’t realize the impact of their actions; they don’t realize where things go when their items thrown overboard or left on the beach “disappear” from their view.
This action puts in danger the health of not only the divers, snorkelers and beach lovers but also the marine life that uses the beaches and oceans as their habitat.
During last year’s International Cleanup Day,Project AWARE Foundation (International) registered more than 145 underwater cleanup events with over 5,350 participants taking part. Reports received revealed that over 52,307 kilos of rubbish was removed from coastal and underwater areas, cigarette butts, soft drink cans and food containers were in the top ten of items
The Event
This year was not different and the Project AWARE Foundation joined forces with the two Euro-Divers centers in Egypt to organize a beach and underwater clean up. Divers, nondivers and snorkelers of all ages participated in the events which took place simultaneous in both dive centers (Club Med El Gouna and Grand Hotel Hurghada)
Approximately 50 people joined the event on each location helping to clean the dive site of El Sawa and Magawish and removing over 200 kilos of debris but more important making people understand their impact when on holidays.
Don’t make yourself part of the problem, respect the environment, do your share and joins us on our next clean up event.
