“As a diver, this terrifies me” Miranda Krestovnikoff

This week’s featured video is a clip from BBC One’s The One Show. The video shows a giant trawler net snagged on the beautiful Manacles reef in Cornwall, UK, standing almost 15 meters (50 feet) tall from the reef.

During the clip, the net is carefully removed by divers from PADI Dive Center Atlantic Scuba to avoid further harm to the local enviroment or marine life. The operation was filmed by BBC film crew and presenter Miranda Krestovnikoff, who acknowledges how daunting this net really is for both divers and marine life.

Sadly, many ghost nets like this may never be found, and will have devastating effects on reefs and our favourite creatures. The wider issue of marine debris reaches even further, with plastic bags, fishing line and other underwater trash causing chaos across the globe. The good news is that you can help to protect the ocean planet by joining Project AWARE’s Dive Against Debris movement and spreading the word to others about the Ugly Journey of Trash.
