Situated in the North-West corner of Lombok, the Gili Islands are a well-known site in Indonesia for diving and snorkeling. There are over 25 dive sites around the 3 atolls that make up this group. They are: Trawangan, Meno and Gili Air. With year round water temperatures of 28 degrees celcius, you can understand the appeal.

Gili Trawangan

As the largest island in the group, Gili Trawangan has plenty to offer the diver, snorkeler and sunbaker. As part of the Gilo Eco Trust, an artificial reef has been set up not far from land, The Big Rock. Comprised of metal reef cages, an electrical current is streamed through to stimulate coral regeneration and attract marine life. A definite must for any diver, but those intrigued further can learn more about this unique enviro-conscious island by taking the PADI Distinctive Specialty.

Gili Meno

This secluded tropical paradise, boasts the infamous Gili Meno Wall. Expect to see gorgeous giant gorgonian fans interspersed by passing turtles. This is also a popular night dive, with Spanish Dancers performing their hypnotizing tango as they move through the warm water.

Gili Air

The closest island to Lombok, Gili Air, similarly to Gili Meno, is far less travelled and offers visitors a chance to relax and soak up the natural beauty that surrounds. Haan’s Reef is a hit destination for muck divers, with underwater photographers frequently heading here to snap the unusual on film. Think the flying gunard, and multiple species of pipefish.
